NATURE OF OUR SCHOOL
Lakefield District Public School is a special school where 3 distinct cultures come together to learn, play and grow. We focus on educating children with a sound foundation of basic skills in language and mathematics while at the same time preparing them for life in the new millennium by providing them with opportunities to apply computer skills to many different curriculum areas. Our very supportive School Council raises money through a variety of activities, which is turned back to the children through the purchase of equipment and support for special projects developed by staff. We, as a staff, set high expectations for student learning and have developed a common belief system called the "LDPS Way" which sets out in plain language those things that make us who we are. Lakefield District P. S. is a small town, community school committed to connecting our students to the wider world by knocking down the walls of our classrooms and welcoming the world inside.
ABOUT OUR STUDENTS
Lakefield District Public School is a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 school, with a student enrolment of 626 students, located in the village of Lakefield. We would like to acknowledge that this school is located on the territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg, as well as, other Indigenous peoples who have shared this land historically and to the present day. We serve the Village of Lakefield (population 2500) and the surrounding area. Lakefield is located on the shores of Lake Katchewanooka in the Kawartha Lakes Region of Southern Ontario.
We have 3 languages of instruction in our school: English (J.K. to Grade 8), French Immersion (S.K. to Grade 8) and Ojibwe (Grades 1 to 8). As the Northern French Immersion centre in our school board, we draw students from the communities of Apsley, Buckhorn, Warsaw and Young's Point. We also serve the Curve Lake First Nation community whose students come to us for Grades 4 through 8. As a school which offers its students language instruction in three different languages, we are very unique. We celebrate our three cultures through activities such as Change of Season Celebrations with traditional dancing, singing and drumming, a winter "Carnaval", spring Fun Fair and celebrations of seasonal holidays and festivals throughout the year. Staff provide a wide variety of intramural activities and inter-school sports for students to be involved in. There are also a wide variety of clubs such as Arts, Redpath Singers, Leadership, Kindness, Makerspace, Highland Dance, Pow Wow and Step Dance. We are very proud of our "Intergenerational Program" which makes connections between our students and our local Senior Citizens organizations.
